The Environment and How Outdoor Enthusiasts Come Into Play

By Jay North

“This land is my land, this land is your land, from California to the New York Island” sang Pete Seeger. While Woody Guthrie penned these now famous words, Mr. Seeger sang the song perhaps more than any- one else and definitely from the heart. There is an element of truth to the words. This is indeed our land and the question concerns whether we could all do more to look after it. Californians have a unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors year ‘round, from the mountains to the sea, and we truly have it all at our collective finger tips. Whether people enjoy snowboarding, surfing, skiing, hiking, biking, boating or fishing, there is no lack of the endless recreational possibilities we may enjoy. However, along with these opportunities for recreation there also comes responsibility.

This focus is on California mountain streams and the endless beauty of the Eastern Sierra with its majestic peeks, national parks, as well as clear streams and lakes. Residents and visitors alike are blessed with so much beauty, unless it becomes trashed. Yes, trashed by men, women and children, the likes of which simply do not understand the harm that they are doing to the environment and the animals that live there in these sacred mountains. Therefore, a change needs to come. This land is my land; this land is your land, and together we should all look after it.

Interview with James Erdman, Biologist from The Dept of Fish Game and Wildlife. Stationed in Bishop, California.

On April 4, 2016.

“Don’t trash my woods,” said James Erdman.”

Jay: Good day, Mr. Erdman, and thank you for taking my call today. Mr. Erdman, what is the most important message you have for people that utilize the Eastern Sierra for recreation?

James Erdman: “KEEP IT CLEAN and don’t trash my mountains.”And then he laughed. No kidding. Really, there are not many outdoors enthusiasts today that have not heard the phrase or observed the sign that reads: “Pack it in, pack it out.” But this simple rule gets violated on a daily basis. It almost seems to me that a lot of folks just don’t care or cannot understand the damage being perpetrated on nature. Animals live in these mountains and near streams in the valleys and eating mankind’s left over is not a good thing. Leaving trash, broken glass and burger wrappers is not appropriate in the woods or next to streams.

He went on about outdoor people’s duty and obligation to be good stewards of the forest and the valleys.

Jay: What would you ask us to do when here in the Eastern Sierra’s wilderness or parks?

James Erdman: Follow the rules! Disposing of trash on the highways is illegal, as it is in the wild and carries a hefty fine. We have signs that tell us to report poachers, but we also need signs that read: Report trasher’s, too.

Jay: What about fisher people? What advice do you have for them?

James Erdman: Use barbless hooks and release more fish than you catch. Furthermore, release fish gently and don’t over fish your limit, even if you are not going to keep them. And please don’t leave your discarded line on the ground as it gets caught up in bird’s beaks and legs. It looks terrible and simply does not belong on the earth. Now, regarding the subject of releasing fish. If a fish swallows your hook, simply cut the line. The hook will eventually dissolve and the fish stands a better chance of living than having the hook yanked out or removed. When you release a fish, keep the body of fishin the water and keep your hands wet, so as not to remove their slime. Leaving fish to be caught by another angler just makes sense, and when it comes to wild trout, it just makes good sense to leave them in the water to breed.

Jay: Any comment regarding fly fishing versus bait fishing?

James Erdman. No, that is a personal choice of every angler; although my personal choice is fly fishing. Regardless, they both need to be performed consciously and responsibly.

Jay: What’s up with this New Zealand snail business?

James Erdman: Well, this snail business as you call it can be dangerous and costly. We have foreign snails finding their way into our waters, both by boaters and wading fisher people. They sometimes are tiny little things that can hardly be seen by the human eye, and they get themselves aboard and pollute our waters and drinking water pipes. The danger is the clogging of pipes and polluting drinking water. Therefore, the Department of Fish Game and Wildlife has asked all fisher people to be aware and to remain vigilant concerning this. When removing boats from lakes, they need to be washed thoroughly and then allowed to dry completely before entering new waters. The same holds true for fisher people. If they use waders, they need to be washed and allowed to dry for 72 hours before entering new streams or lakes. The California Department of Fish Game and Wildlife is working hard to rid our waters of these peskysnails.Oh, and one other way to clean waders is to freeze them for 24 hours before reusing them.

Jay: And what do you have to say about backpackers, climbers and campers?

James Erdman: (He laughs). Listen, Jay, when I say these are my mountains, I mean it. These mountains belong to all of us. This is how I work! When I take my crew up into the back country, we carry trash bags and ask crew members every day whenwe are in the high county to pick up one piece of trash every day.You would be surprised to see the amount of bottles, cans and plastic we remove each and every trip up in the woods. It’s truly a disgrace! I believe there are more educational programs in place than ever before and yet trashing the woods still occurs on a regular basis. And as far as campers go, I have to say they are the worst offenders of trasher’s in the Eastern Sierra’s. In fact, twice each year a highly popular group of citizens come together to clean up several rivers and drainages in order to remove mounds of trash from Mono Lakes, Mammoth Lakes, and all the way down to Alabama Hills. It’s only twice per year and only a two day event, but it does a lot of good to remove the things people leave behind.

Jay: Mr. Erdman, I would like to share a story with you. It was July 4t, 2015 and one of the Eastern Sierra’s busiest weekends. I was camped at Pleasant Valley on the Owens River, and as you know, it’sa wonderful trout fishery below the reservoir. It was dusk and here they came in minions. Directlyacross from where I set up, there was a group of folks, men, women and young children, all setting up camp. I knew it was going to be a sleepless night justbased on the rowdy nature of the group. After two days of this, oh my goodness, I was wondering what I was doing there on the 4th of July. On the third morning, a quite large group of boys were playing down on the Owens River. At first I thought to myself, “How nice it is to hear children’s laughter. But wait; there is more to this story. These young people were dumping their camps trash right into the river. “Oh Lord no,”I thought. “What are you guys doing? I yelped! The reply was not pleasing. Therefore, I took a stroll over the bridge, walked up to the camp, and with as much composure as I could muster I asked: “Whose children are these?”“What’s it to you came the terse reply. “Well, folks, your children are trashing my river. I cannot write the people’sresponse because it would tend tooffend too many readers. “Now wait one minute guys, these fine young feathered heads are pouring trash bags full of junk in the river!”What business is it of yours was the reply once again. “It is my business and I should be yours as well. This is our land and water.”Mind your own business was their retort. What business was it of mine, they asked anew? I then replied, “This is my river! The situation was about to become violent. I backed off, packed up my gear and called the authorities. Mr. Erdman, what do we do?

James Erdman: We educate them one at a time, and yes, we call the authorities.

Jay: Is there anything else you would like to add regarding these subjects?

James Erdman: Yes, don’t trash my waters. People will come to realize this one day, but we are talking about our drinking water here and the health of our environment. I know there is a popular saying out in the world today that says, “Wake up.” And that is what humanity needs to do, exactly, wake up, take responsibility, and take action to preserve what is ours. Of course, there is a delicate balance we face between survival and personal pleasures. We are not just talking about people that enjoy the outdoors. It is everyone’s duty to protect and preserve what we have been blessed with. It is an obligation we should all sign onto in order to protect our planet. Our government can create all the laws it is capable of dreaming up, but in truth it is when people take action, that is become proactive, that we will see real results and not just here in the Eastern Sierra. No, we need to come together on important environmental issues all over the great state of California and in fact, the entire planet. But, I will tell you this: Don’t trash my waters.

To contact Mr. Erdman, pleasecall 🙁 760)873-6071.

Readers may be asking themselves: How safe is the drinking water from the Owens River? Well, when one considers the adverse conditions in third world countries, the water would appear to be considerably safer. In fact, the Los Angeles Department of Power and Water (LADWP) asserts that countless people work to ensure that the water in the Owens River is safe to drink. Despite livestock grazing, wildlife, and the unauthorized public use ofstorage reservoirs, the water is still safe to drink. Having said that, it is imperative that we all do our part in keeping it safe. Throwing trash such as bottles, cans, clothing and whatever else one desires to discard, isn’t helping maintain the quality of water we now enjoy. Imagine having to consume muddy water that is contaminated for survival? Some people in other parts of the world do just that, and yet the diseases associated with this consumption are frightening. And yet, while most people take safe drinking water for granted, there is no assurance that it will always be available if people continue to pollute streams and watersheds.

It is therefore incumbent on each and every one of us to think about our actions and how they can affect our precious environment. Outdoor enthusiasts especially need to stop and consider the harm they carelessly do. The collective destruction affects all of us. While the LADWP seeks to maintain the highest quality of water for everybody, detrimental and needless trashing reaches into everyone’s pockets. Maintaining healthy drinking water becomes costlier as damage to the environment increases. Man as an animal is careless, unfortunately. In fact, animals have a minimal impact on the Owens River. The real harm stems from careless men, women and children, who, seeking to have a good time, are nevertheless not thinking about the consequences of their actions. Sure, have fun, but be a responsible protector of the Owens River.

Let’s all work together and keep the Owens River free of debris that affects us all. To accomplish this, we can all do our part by properly disposing of our waste responsibly. Water is life and without it we perish. Think about that the next time you decide to toss a bottle, diaper or other harmful product in the river. Eventually, you may regret it, not just simply in terms of money, but rather in terms of your health and an available healthy water to drink for the future. After all, your life and mine depend upon it. Be responsible. Protect the environment!

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, the USEPA and the state Department of Health ServicesDepartment prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public watersystems. Department regulations also establish limits for contaminants in bottled water that must provide the sameprotection for public health. Writer Jay North’s comments:

Mr. Erdman’s views on environmental concerns in the Eastern Sierra touches my soul deeply. Eversince I was I boy, I have been enjoying these mountains and streams. They will always be here and for that I am deeply grateful. Things were completely different back in the days of my youth. People did not trash these mountains and streams, nor even dare tofeed the bears. It seems there was a collective consideration to preserve this beauty for many generations to come. Back then (in the 1950s) there was never a thought of not cleaning up after one’s self, nor leaving trash behind. We just did it quite naturally. It seems there was a silent agreement among outdoor folks to just keep the area clean. Somehow that has gotten away from us! When Mr. Erdman says, “Don’t trash my mountains and streams,” he is effectively saying, “Don’t trash our mountains and streams. I know he wanted to say moreand toteach children well, but I believe he just assumes we allwill. My hope and prayer for these mountains and streams is that they will be kept clean for as long as people use the resources of the majestic Eastern Sierra.

– We Must Solve The Refugee Crisis – NOW!!!

By Jay North

Refugees flooding USA, Europe and other nations around the world are more than a crisis it is a full blown emergency!  Not since World War II has there been such a massive exodus from homes, loved ones and countries, particularly in the war torn Middle East. US National Census reports that there are over sixty million people displaced by global conflicts of war and tribal strife. And the count continues to rise in 2016.[1]

While many people throughout the world are in shock because of the crisis there are also many people that feel disconnected and confused about the root causes of these conflicts. The causes are complex, but stem from two main issues. #1 war: unfortunately peace on earth has not yet become a reality; we must work towards a utopian and enlightened society. #2 greed by Wall Street and the companies that profit from the war machine. War is big business; corporations and individuals profit from conflict. Since the year 1991 when the USA first invaded Iraq the US alone has spent over 300 TRILLION dollars in supporting wars and population reduction of dark skinned people particularly in the Middle East, just as we did in the 1930’ and 40’s in Hitler’s Germany in the extermination of millions of Jews and gypsies.  If we follow the rants of presidential candidate Donald Trump refugees in the USA would likely suffer internment camps, not unlike the American Japanese did also in the 1940’s. [2]

This opinion article is about saving lives, rising up and shouting no more war-we have had enough. The article is about real hope, real change and being of service. This writer would ask you to look deep into your heart and recognize these HUMAN BEINGS that have been displaced, uprooted from homes, friend’s family, church, business and all they held dear. They are people just like the rest of us and need and deserve help beyond just money.  I read a news feed recently of a 19 year old girl that lost her entire family including her newlywed husband as a result of their unarmed boat being turning over in the Mediterranean Sea. Trump supporters may be delighted to know it was a purposeful attack to kill or turn these people around. She did survive-only one out of 180 people that died. Subsequently, she was rescued after four days alone in a life preserver. She was adopted by a Kansas City, MO family that sent to school to learn to read and write English and now going into nursing school. Some might refer to this young woman as a potential terrorist.  Is this is the act of love and kindness or charity? Yes it is and that is what we need to foster more of around the world. We are people plain and simple; we are just like everyone else in our suffering our delights and our desires.

Next time you find yourself in a church, a temple, a mosaic or chanting around a fire circle, ask yourself “what can I do?” I suggest you stop trying to find God and please stop trying to make yourself happy. There is world of hurt going on, and you are needed to help ease it. Am I preaching? Hell yes I am. While the world is boiling humanitarians are need to help fix it. If you believe that putting your faith in your vote will change anything-well then you are quite naive. The world does not need politicians, preachers or rock stars telling us how to fix the problems, we need to finally come together and fix the problems-not argue about them. Before you post the next cute picture of your dog and cat on Facebook, take an hour out of your day and ask what I can do to make a difference. Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country and the people coming to it.

What Authors need most? READERS!

According to Amazon statistics nearly one million new books come on the market every year. With staggering figures like this the question is how do fledging authors gain recognition?  While it is also a fact there are over 1000 routes to gain readership or more aptly stated “market ones book.”  Readership via electronic gadgets is growing, and readership of hard copy books is way down, the challenge for nearly one million authors per year remains the same; how to gain readers and actually make a living at their craft.

One may want to choose from the many low cost routes to the market via Facebook or Twitter to gain exposure, do personal appearances and book signings or make a plea to the press and media for exposure.

Bestselling author and book marketer Jay North offers authors the services they need to get their message out about their books. Jay’s constant statements to authors is “an artist creates to share his work with the world, a philosopher enjoys students and a writer writes to be read, and these crafts are not for our own enjoyment and we deserve compensation.”

While the world mourns death and injury in Belgium this week there is yet another serious disaster that occurs daily. Death from diabetes kills millions of people around the world annually and it is given little notice. While many questions about the disease are asked, regarding the cause and a possible cure; people continue to suffer and die from the killer. (http://www.einstein.yu.edu/centers/diabetes-research/facts-statistics/)

It will prove to be worth ones time to research the causes and natural treatments-since science has not offered much help. To start with, a close look at diet and activity could be good place to start whether one suffers from type 1 or type 2 diabetes; a change just might beat what the doctor orders. The problem is with sugars and insulin assimilation to the blood supply. The 1st act of pro-survival for people that suffer from the effects of diabetes is to cut out ALL white sugar in raw and treated form, and start moving. (https://www.invokana.com/testimonial?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Condition&utm_term=diabetes&utm_content=Diabetes+-+Condition|mkwid|8KkSQswo_dc|pcrid|9720219563)

While no one with diabetes doubts, sugar is the cause of the disease; many people could reverse the effects completely with two simple steps. One start moving! Even by starting a mild exercise program of using a stepping board for 5 minutes three times a day can have a dramatic effect of easing spike in blood sugar. Starting with short walks and then increasing to longer walks when one feels ready will also bring about major improvements for diabetic suffers. Doctors now agree exercise and diet are two major factors in treating diabetes successfully. Many doctors around the world now agree that a 99% organic green diet is the best choice-and not just for diabetes. Finally getting involved in a support group to deal with the health issues suffers face can have an optimal result in reversing the effect and even dare I say a “possible cure.” (http://healthylist.co/Diabetes-Cure/?tid=71878&keyword=cure%20type%202%20diabetes&query=cause%20of%20diabetes&match=b&ad=11856259983&kwid=114720152576&adgroup=broad)

Natural treatment for diabetes

Natural treatment for diabetes

By Jay North

“The medical establishment works closely with the drug multinationals whose main objective is profits, and whose worst nightmare would be an epidemic of good health. Lots of drugs must be sold. In order to achieve this, anything goes: lies, fraud, and kickbacks. Doctors are the principal salespeople of the drug companies. They are rewarded with research grants, gifts, and lavish perks. The principal buyers are the public – from infants to the elderly – who MUST be thoroughly medicated and vaccinated…at any cost! Why do the authorities forbid alternative medicine? Because they are serving the industry, and the industry cannot make money with herbs, vitamins, and homeopathy until they license it to their benefit. They cannot patent natural remedies, not yet anyways. That is why they push synthetics. They control medicine, and that is why they are able to tell medical schools what they can and cannot teach.” Guylaine Lanctot, M.D

Natural remedies for diabetics are not taken as seriously by people as they should be. Instead, people become insulin-dependent and often require higher and more frequent dosages of insulin in order to maintain some modicum of normalcy in their lives. Diabetics can obtain a natural cure simply by adapting to a raw foods diet or adhering to a vegetarian diet, and shunning of the over-processed and refined foods that often cause juvenile-onset or adult-onset diabetes (often predicated by hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic symptoms) to begin with.

I remember when I was visiting in the home of some friends. Their young daughter, age six, went to the refrigerator, took out a small vial of insulin and filled her needle, went to her mother and asked her to check it to make sure it was right, then came over, stood directly in front of me and proudly and quickly injected herself in the arm.

Of course I gave her instant praise for doing such a great job. It was evident that she was very proud of herself for being able to do this, but at the same time, my heart broke. Why should a young child have to do something like this to herself? Not just once but every day and possibly for the rest of her life. While other children were taking pride in the new found ability to tie their own shoestrings, why should Sharon have to have mastered the skill to be able to stick a needle in her arm and give herself insulin shots in case the time ever came when she needed to have an injection and there was no adult available who had the skill to be able to do it for her? It was then that I determined that, although I’m not a doctor, as I researched into the field of living healthy through eating organically and natural healing, I would learn all I could about anything that nature had to offer that might help those persons with diabetes and many other physical challenges. It might not stop Sharon from having to take the shots, but it might help her to live healthier and possibly all the other “Sharon’s” in the world also.

Does nature have anything to offer? Yes it does. What I personally consider to be miraculous cures and wondrous natural organic gifts that will control this disease so that maybe at least some of those who have it will not have to stick needles into themselves. These things have been shown to help to control blood sugar levels and so be a tremendous gift to those with diabetes in a healthy, natural way.

One such organic substance is Aspalathus linearis, otherwise known as Rooibos.

Rooibos is an herb which has been found growing only in the Cedarberg Mountains on the Western Cape of South Africa. It is a natural substance which many doctor and other health care experts believe helps to keep the human body healthy organically in a wide variety of areas, including diabetes. It is believed to help control blood sugar levels. It is extremely nutritious and contains alphahydroxy acid, potassium, copper, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, manganese and fluoride.

Rooibos is taken into the body as a tea. In Africa, it is referred to as the miracle tea while the people in Japan refer to it as the long life tea. It contains absolutely no caffeine and a very small amount of tannin, so it is very sweet on its own without having any sweetening substance added. The indigenous people of South Africa, harvest the wild rooibos, cut the leaves and stems, and then beat them with wooden hammers. After this, they are fermented in heaps and then sun dried. When they are deemed to be ready, they are brewed and enjoyed.

Another organic substance believed by many to help to combat diabetes is Sutherlandia frutescence, which is also called Kanker Bossie or Cancer Bush. This too is indigenous to South Africa. Sutherlandia frutescens has been shown to be a source of pinitol which has been proven clinically to be an effective anti-diabetes agent. Sutherlandia frutescens also has been shown to be a major combatant against other diseases that attack the human body. The people in South Africa prepare Sutherland frutescens and take it as an herbal tonic, feeling that its health benefits are worth the bitter taste which it produces.

Herbal remedy believed to have great benefit: Salacia oblonga is a woody plant from India and Sri Lanka that is little-known in the United States, but a recent study at Ohio State University is changing that. Practitioners of traditional Indian medicine have used the herb for years to treat diabetes, and the study indicates that ingesting the herb does lower insulin and blood sugar levels.

David Crawford, well know nutritional expert and a member of the Nutritional Therapy Council, recommends to a number of his patients who have diabetes that they try drinking juice extracted from Brussels sprouts and string beans, both of these being natural sources of insulin. He also recommends foods that are natural sources of silicon, since this has been shown to help to support the pancreas. Such foods are lettuce, mustard greens, olives, asparagus, dandelion greens, cabbage, cucumbers, alfalfa, and radishes which he often includes in his juicing recipes.

Scientists at the University of Manitoba in Canada, claim that their research studies show that the herb known as buckwheat may be beneficial as a treatment for diabetes. Lead researcher Dr Carla Taylor said, “With diabetes on the rise, incorporation of buckwheat into the diet could help provide a safe, easy and inexpensive way to lower glucose levels and reduce the risk of complications associated with the disease, including heart, nerve and kidney problems. Buckwheat won’t cure diabetes,” she added. “But we’d like to evaluate its inclusion in food products as a management aid.”

The main ingredient in buckwheat is chiroinositol, a compound which is seldom found in other sources. Researchers are not sure just how it works, but are convinced that it does have a direct, positive effect on in making cells more sensitive to insulin or may ever act as an insulin mimic.

Another warrior (I am, after all, Blackfeet) in the battle against diabetes is what is called the Glycaemic Index. No, this isn’t some never-before-heard-of food; it is rather a way of scaling the rate at which various foods affect the blood sugar levels. An erratic “bouncing” of blood sugar levels from one level to the other can cause erratic behavior in a person with diabetes, which can be as frustrating to the person with diabetes as it is to those around them.

The secret seems to be to eat foods that are on the lower level of the Glycaemic Index — that is, those that are ranked at fifty or less. By so doing, you can cut down on and possibly eliminate such unacceptable behaviors as food rages, road rages, temper tantrums and squabbling, all of which have been shown to be reactions to low blood sugar levels, rather than deliberate bad behavior.

Macrobiotic diet consisting of mainly brown rice and steamed vegetables has been reported to be extremely beneficial. The most popular diet for treating diabetes is a macrobiotic diet that excludes all forms of white sugar salt and meat of any kind. (Nope, no cheese burgers.) The foods that are included are non-spiced brown rice and steamed vegetables. The Pritikin Diet is fairly well known throughout the world for treating people with diabetes with this special diet and exercise. People who are challenged with this dis-ease are well advised to increase their activity level and long walks and jogging are in order.

Also dark green organic vegetables and as much fruit as one desire is cover extensively in the book Fit for Life.

Now remember, I am not a doctor. I am a farmer and spiritual healer, a writer and a researcher. I do not recommend that you go off and start self-doctoring yourself with this stuff! Talk to your doctor; ask him or her about the possibility of these organic substances being of help to you. You may have other health issues that will offer good reasons why they would not be. Don’t get your medical advice completely from the pages of a book – this one or any other! Check through the various sources available to you, including your medical doctor, and get on the regime that is best for you.

You hear people say there is no cure for diabetes, but there actually is if you look to the organic foods produced by nature. Plant-based vegetarian foods, whole foods like whole grains and breads, and organic foods that are rich in organic nutrients and enzymes that promote healthy digestion are the key to curing diabetes naturally. A diabetic can change his diet and lifestyle, opting for holist healing foods and choosing to shop at organic food stores – and he will feel the difference in his overall health and well being.

Often we develop food addictions to high carbohydrate, high sugar foods; these are the foods that exacerbate the condition of diabetes and put undue stress on our organs, including the insulin-producing pancreas. Foods that are high in simple carbohydrates, including refined sugars, are in no way a part of naturally curing diabetes. The opposite is true, as these organic and nutritional foods work with your body to prevent disease and promote holistic health.

Upon reading this heartfelt, humorous and tender story I found myself sobbing as I reconnected to my own natural roots to mother nature, the Great Spirit of love and my memories of dancing the Sacred Sun Dance with the Blackfeet many times which had positively transformed and healed me and my family. How beautifully Jay retold his experience of the wisdom from Leonard and the love that transcends all cultures and time. This message is VITAL right now, the message to seek connection with one’s TRUE SELF and connection with all beings with honor and kindness. The wisdom of the elders is given with such clarity anyone of any culture can be the beneficiary of its inspiration. The simplicity of Jay’s story, the places, the people are still with me as if I experienced them all myself with him. Thank you Jay for sharing your vulnerability and the wisdom that can never be recalled too much. I highly recommend this story and to share with all friends and family.

It will never change until we change it!

And the band plays on! While its politics as usual 2016 and all US citizens know nothing will change because the belly of the beast on Wall Street controls the whole damn machine. While many people have their eyes on the economy; 25 of the world’s worst man-made ecological disasters occurred in 2015 and little attention was ever given as to how or why. This is sad news for the whole planet and for the people that live on it.

While so many American’s put their faith in big business, politics and the economy it just might behoove one to put equal attention on nature and our environment. As my adopted father Leonard J. Mountain Chief would often repeat “a change has got to come, sooner better than later.”

I urge all concerned people to read my book about my mentor/father in my book, Open Spaces: My Life With Leonard J. Mountain Chief, as seen at OneGlobePress.com in hard copy’s and FREE in PDF with your request to jaysbookshere@gmail.com.

“Without this place the children have no place to run and play, please tell a friend,” Leonard J. Mountain Chief. It will never change until we change it!

Thank you

Herbs that cure cancer

1 ASTRAGALUS (Huang Qi): A Chinese herb; an immune system booster, known to stimulate body´s natural production of interferon. It also helps the immune system identify rogue cells. Work with the herb in both cancer and AIDS cases have been encouraging. The MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas conducted research showing that taking Astragalus when having Radiotherapy doubled survival times.

2 BERBERIS FAMILY (e.g. Podophyllum peltanum): Slow active purgative. Research has shown these herbs to have a strong action against cancer and they have been used with many cancers, especially ovarian cancer. In Cancer Watch March 2015, the herb was shown in research to outperform brain cancer drug, Temozolomide in vitro.

3 BLOODROOT (Sanguinaria Canadensis): Research shows consistent anti-neoplastic activity. It has been shown to be effective against cancer tumors, and can shrink them; it is one of the herbs in an anti-cancer poultice called Black Salve; and has proven useful with sarcomas.

4 BUTCHERS BROOM (Ruscus aculeatus): The active ingredients of this herb have been found to be the ruscogenins which have tumor-shrinking and anti-oestrogenic abilities. Thus its use in the treatment of breast cancer.

5 CAT’S CLAW (Uncaria tormentosa): An adaptogen and powerful immune-stimulant, it enhances the white cells cleanup process (phagocytosis). It is an excellent companion to astragalus, curcumin and Echinacea. Research indicates it can reduce tumor size, particularly with skin cancers. It also helps reduce the side-effects of chemo and radiotherapy.

6 CHAPARRAL (Larrea Mexicana): Cancer Watch covered a major research study from the US which heaped praise on this herb. It appears to boost the immune system, stop metastases and reduce tumor size. Seems especially interesting with breast cancer and is another ingredient in Black Salve. It is also an anti-oxidant and anti-microbial, with low toxicity.

7 CURCUMIN (Turmeric): This spice (Curcuma longa or Turmeric root) has been shown to have significant anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activity. That alone seems enough for certain hospitals in America to consider using it in the treatment of polyps and colon cancer. However new research shows that it can both shrink cancer tumors and inhibit blood supply growth to tumors. It is a powerful antioxidant with liver protective benefits, and outperformed several anti-inflammatory drugs without side-effects in research.

8 DANG SHEN ROOT (Codonopsis pilosula): increases both the white blood cell and red blood cell levels, so can be extremely helpful to patients having chemotherapy and radiotherapy, or to patients whose cancer diminishes levels of either.

9 ECHINACEA: Another known immune system booster, it gained a populist reputation in treating colds.  There is research on its helpfulness with brain tumors apart from its abilities to increase the levels of certain immune white cells in the body.

10 FEVERFEW: This herb caused a storm when research from Rochester University in New York showed it to be more effective than the drug cytarabine in killing leukaemia cells. The US Food and Drug Agency put the active ingredient, parthenolide, on to its fast track program. Nothing has yet been heard. But then, the FDA has never approved an herb for use as a cancer treatment.

11 GOLDENSEAL: One cause of stomach cancer can be the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. This burrows into the mucous lining of the stomach to hide from gastric acids, and then causes irritation, acid reflux, ulcers and even cancer. Goldenseal is generally anti-microbial and is used in the Caribbean and South East Asia against parasites. Goldenseal, helped by the mineral Bismuth, will kill Helicobacter pylori. Vets seem to know this, even if doctors don´t.

12 MILK THISTLE: Known for years to be helpful to the liver, this herb has now been shown to be capable of protecting the liver during chemotherapy. Research in America showed that leukemia patients who took milk thistle had reduced liver toxicity and chemo side-effects. There is a little evidence that it has its own anti-cancer activity too.

13 PAU D’ARCO: This tree bark was original thought to be a strong anti-cancer agent, but then its actions were clarified as strongly anti-bacterial, anti-yeast and anti-microbial. That alone might be enough in some cases of cancer cause. But new research on the differing ingredients has shown the quinoids possess immune strengthening abilities and seem to help in cases of blood and lymph cancers.

14 RED CLOVER: Research from a number of cancer centers including the Royal Marsden has shown its potential as a part of a treatment program against oestrogen-driven cancers, from breast to prostate. One active ingredient in the so-called Herb of Hippocrates is the anti-oestrogen Genistein, which Professor Powles formerly of the Royal Marsden dubbed ´the anti-estrogen´.

15 SHEEP’S SORRELL: Used in Essiac and other herbal remedies, it is a cleanser and aids healthy tissue regeneration. There is some suggestion from research that it helps normalize damaged cells and tissue. It is also a highly praised ´vermifuge´ – intestinal worms have little or no resistance to this herb.

16 SKULLCAP (Scutellaria barbate): Research has shown action against many cancer types, for example against cancers of the lung, stomach and intestines.

17 SUTHERLANDIA (Cancer Bush): Peer reviewed research studies indicate that this herb is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-fungal. It boosts the immune system and inhibits tumor Necrosis Factor, known to drive wasting in cancer patients.

18 THOROWAX, or HARES EAR (Bulpleurum scorzoneraefolium): Research has shown its ability to enhance the production of natural interferon and it seems especially useful in bone cancer.

19 WHEATGRASS: One of the top private hospitals in South East Asia extols the benefits of freshly juiced wheatgrass. One shot gives you the chlorophyll of some 12 or more kilograms of broccoli. It acts as a blood purifier, and liver and kidney cleansing agent. In research, after two weeks of daily use, blood and tissue oxygen levels improve, as does circulation.

20 WORMWOOD: Another Chinese Herb, this has outperformed certain anti-malaria drugs and is now used by the aid agencies. It is strongly anti-microbial and anti-yeast and can be used as an effective part of an anti-Candida diet. Also certain cancer treatments cause excesses of yeasts to form (for example, in leukemia treatment) threatening the patients health further. Excess yeasts are even felt by some cancer experts to be one of the causes of cancer. However, in recent research Wormwood has been shown to have direct anti-cancer properties.
